Sometimes the reader and characters need time to relax after a hi-octane series of events. A scene showing the character's reaction and thoughts on previous events can be useful.
The protagonist's head will take over from their emotions. They will reflect on what has happened, and by the end of the scene, they will have formulated a new goal/plan.
Often, these scenes take place entirely inside a character's mind, or include dialogue with a friend of the protagonist.
